Recommended IS Conferences
Australian IS researchers conduct mostly multi-disciplinary research on socio-technical issues. While our discipline prefers journal publications as the final outlet for the research results, our conferences are mostly used to collect timely feedback from peer groups and senior researchers on the results obtained so far.
The conferences in the list were discussed and endorsed by ACPHIS, hence, the quality of these has been tested by the people who publish in those outlets. The list includes both generic and specialised conferences which are not sponsored by international professional association (e.g., the ones in knowledge management, security, eBusiness, etc), which may be useful to attend but can’t be compared to the ones in the list on the basis of the rigour of the selection process.
Conferences are included in this list based on credibility of the review and selection process. At this stage, there is no comparative ranking proposed. The list is published as a reference guide for our students and early career researchers.
Review Process
The current Recommended IS Conferences list was reviewed in 2024 by an ACPHIS-appointed working group. The objective of the review was to ensure the list remains a useful resource to support the community’s informed decisions on conference participation, particularly for PhD candidates and early career researchers.
The working group was endorsed by the ACPHIS Committee and operated between April and October 2024. Over this period, the team held seven online meetings and maintained continuous communication to evaluate conferences against clearly defined criteria, including sponsorship by reputable professional associations, peer-review processes, disciplinary relevance, and engagement opportunities for emerging researchers.
The review process was informed by insights from the 2023 ACPHIS research survey and community feedback. The updated list and accompanying guide (Information Systems Conferences: Tips, Tricks and Hacks for Research Students and Early Career Researchers) will be maintained and periodically reviewed to reflect the evolving IS research landscape in Australia and New Zealand.

Tips, Tricks, and Hacks for Conference Selection
Choosing which conferences to attend and present at can be challenging, especially for research students and early career researchers. Beyond the official ACPHIS Recommended Conference List, we have developed a complementary resource, the “ACPHIS Conference Selection: Tips, Tricks and Hacks” guide, to help you make informed and strategic decisions.
This short guide draws on advice from senior academics and ACPHIS members to help you:
-
Identify the most relevant and reputable IS conferences for your research;
-
Weigh up multiple conference options;
-
Maximise networking and professional growth opportunities; and
-
Plan your participation strategically to get the best value from your time and funding.
